🇮🇪 Ireland

Healthcare

Ireland has a two-tier healthcare system: public (HSE) with long waiting lists and private with faster access. Most expats get private insurance. Non-EU residents typically need insurance for visa applications.

Healthcare in Ireland

Ireland operates a mixed public-private healthcare system. The public system (Health Service Executive/HSE) provides care to all residents but faces capacity challenges and long waiting lists.

Public Healthcare (HSE)

Eligibility: You become "ordinarily resident" after living in Ireland for 1 year (or intending to stay 1+ year), entitling you to public healthcare.

Medical Card: Free GP visits and hospital care if income below €184/week (single). Covers about 37% of population.

GP Visit Card: Free GP visits only, income threshold slightly higher.

Without cards: Pay per visit - GP visits cost €30-65, specialist consultations €100-150.

Public hospital care:

  • A&E charge: €100 (waived if referred by GP)
  • Inpatient: €80/night up to €800/year maximum
  • Outpatient: Free

The catch: Waiting lists can be extremely long—months to years for non-emergency procedures.

Private Healthcare

Most expats choose private insurance for:

  • Faster access to consultants and procedures
  • Choice of hospital and specialist
  • Private room in hospital
  • Skip public waiting lists

Main providers:

ProviderTypical Annual CostNotes
VHI€1,500-3,000+Largest network, extensive coverage
Laya€1,200-2,500Good mental health benefits
Irish Life Health€1,000-2,200Mid-range, bundled options
Level Health€800-1,500Digital-first, good for young expats

Average cost: €1,858/year (expected to rise 5-7% in 2026).

For Visa Applicants

Non-EU students and retirees: Private health insurance is mandatory for visa applications.

Critical Skills permit holders: Employers often provide health insurance as part of benefits package.

EU/EEA citizens: EHIC card covers temporary stays but not long-term residence.

Finding Care

  • GP (General Practitioner): Your first point of contact. Register with a local GP surgery. Cost: €50-65 per visit without medical card.
  • Pharmacies: Well-distributed, many open late. Some medications require prescription that don't elsewhere.
  • Emergency: A&E departments at hospitals. Dial 999 or 112 for emergencies.
  • Dental: Mostly private. PRSI may cover basic check-ups.

Mental Health

  • Public mental health services are overstretched
  • Private therapy: €60-120 per session
  • Some insurance plans cover mental health
  • Pieta House offers free crisis support
