Weather Considerations for Expats

Coming from cold climates:

  • You'll love winter (mild by comparison)
  • Summer humidity on the coast can be oppressive
  • Air conditioning is non-negotiable in summer
  • Desert heat (Negev, Eilat) is extreme - carry water always

Coming from tropical climates:

  • Winter rain and cold in Jerusalem may surprise you
  • Heating is needed but buildings are not well-insulated
  • Dry summer heat is different from tropical humidity

Practical Tips

  1. Solar water heaters (dud shemesh) are on almost every rooftop - saves electricity
  2. Drink plenty of water especially in summer (carry a bottle everywhere)
  3. Sunscreen is essential year-round (UV is strong)
  4. Sharav warning: During hot desert wind events, air quality drops and temperatures spike - stay indoors if possible
  5. Winter rain: Heavy but intermittent - a good umbrella and waterproof jacket suffice

Pro Tips

  • Air conditioning is essential in summer - check before renting
  • Jerusalem is significantly cooler than Tel Aviv, especially at night
  • Carry water everywhere in summer - dehydration is a real risk
  • Solar water heaters (dud shemesh) mean free hot water most of the year
  • Sharav/Hamsin heat waves can last 2-3 days - plan outdoor activities around them
