🇮🇹 Italy

Healthcare

Italy has an excellent universal healthcare system (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN) ranking among the world's best. Legal residents can register for free or low-cost care. Private insurance provides faster access for non-urgent matters.

Healthcare in Italy

Italy's Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN), established in 1978, provides universal healthcare based on principles of solidarity, equity, and dignity. It consistently ranks among the top 10 healthcare systems globally.

The SSN System

The public healthcare system covers:

  • Hospital care (full coverage)
  • Specialist visits (small copays)
  • Prescription medications (subsidized)
  • Emergency care (free)
  • Preventive care and vaccinations
  • Mental health services

Quality: Italian hospitals are well-equipped, and doctors are highly trained. Major cities have centers of excellence for specialized care.

Who Can Access the SSN

Mandatory Enrollment (free):

  • Italian citizens
  • EU citizens working/studying in Italy
  • Non-EU with residence permits for work, family, or long-term residency

Students: Voluntary SSN (€150/year) or private insurance (€30,000 minimum required)

Private Healthcare

Many residents combine SSN with private insurance for:

  • Faster specialist appointments (SSN waits can be weeks to months)
  • English-speaking doctors
  • Private hospital rooms
  • Dental and optical care (limited SSN coverage)

Private insurance costs: €100-300/month depending on coverage
