Living with the Climate

Air Conditioning:

  • Essential in hot season
  • Expect ฿2,000-5,000+ monthly electricity in hot months
  • Many cafes/malls are heavily air-conditioned

Dress Code:

  • Light, breathable clothing
  • Umbrella/rain jacket during monsoon
  • Temple visits require covered shoulders/knees
  • Flip-flops widely acceptable

Health Considerations:

  • Stay hydrated (more than you think)
  • Heatstroke is real—take it seriously
  • UV is intense—use sunscreen
  • Mosquitoes more active in rainy season

Best Times to Visit/Live

Best overall: November-February (cool season)

  • Most pleasant weather
  • Peak prices and crowds
  • Major festivals (Loy Krathong, New Year)

Budget travel: June-October (green season)

  • 30-50% lower prices
  • Fewer tourists
  • Brief rain doesn't ruin days

Avoid: April in Bangkok/Chiang Mai (extreme heat)

Natural Disasters

Flooding: Bangkok and low-lying areas can flood during heavy monsoon. Major floods occurred in 2011 but improved infrastructure since.

Tsunamis: Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is in tsunami zone. Warning systems improved since 2004.

Earthquakes: Northern Thailand occasionally feels earthquakes from Myanmar, generally minor.
