All banks have headquarters in Nuku'alofa with limited branches elsewhere.

Opening a Bank Account

Requirements typically include:

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of address in Tonga (lease, utility bill)
  • Employment letter or proof of income source
  • Immigration documentation (visa)
  • Reference letter from home bank (sometimes required)

Process:

  • Visit the branch in person (online opening not available)
  • Processing takes 1-7 days

ATM Access

Important considerations:

  • ATMs available in Tongatapu and Vava'u only
  • Ha'apai and 'Eua have no ATMs - bring cash
  • BSP ATMs accept Visa, Cirrus, MasterCard, UnionPay
  • Withdrawal fee: TOP 8-15 per transaction
  • Daily withdrawal limits apply

International Transfers

Options for sending/receiving money:

  • BSP Telegraphic Transfer: 1-3 business days
  • MBf Bank transfers: Similar timing
  • Western Union: Available through agents
  • MoneyGram: Multiple agent locations
  • 'Ave Pa'anga Pau: Low-cost transfers from NZ/Australia

Remittances are crucial to Tonga - 37% of GDP comes from overseas transfers, so the infrastructure is well-developed for receiving money.
