London has excellent public transport (Tube, buses, trains). Outside London, transport is more limited and many areas require a car. Trains connect major cities but are expensive. Getting a UK driving licence takes time.

Transport quality varies dramatically between London (excellent) and the rest of the UK (mixed).

London Transport (TfL)

The Tube (Underground):

  • 11 lines, 270+ stations
  • Runs 5am-midnight (24hr on weekends on some lines)
  • Zone system determines fares
  • Oyster/contactless payment essential

Buses:

  • Extensive network, 24-hour routes
  • Flat fare £1.75 (may freeze until July 2026)

National Rail

Train travel between cities:

  • Often expensive, especially last-minute

Driving

Using your foreign licence:

  • Can drive on non-UK licence for 12 months
  • After 12 months, must exchange or take UK test

Getting a UK licence:

  1. Apply for provisional licence
  2. Pass theory test (£23)
  3. Pass practical test (£62)
  4. Many take 40+ hours of lessons (£35-50/hour)

Car ownership costs:

  • Insurance: £400-1,000+/year (higher without UK driving history)
  • Road tax: £0-400+/year depending on emissions
  • MOT: £55/year (required after 3 years)
  • Fuel: ~£1.40/litre

Outside London

Other cities with good transport:

  • Manchester: Metrolink tram, good buses
  • Edinburgh: Lothian buses, trams
  • Birmingham: Metro, extensive buses
  • Glasgow: Subway, buses
  • Newcastle: Metro system

Rural areas: Public transport often limited. Car usually necessary.

Cycling

  • Growing infrastructure in cities
  • Cycle to Work scheme: tax-free bike purchase
  • London: Santander Cycles hire (£1.65 per 30 mins)
  • Many cities have bike-share schemes
  • Helmet not legally required but recommended
