United Kingdom Visa Options

12 visa types available

The UK operates a points-based system with employer-sponsored Skilled Worker visas (£41,700 minimum salary from 2025), Global Talent for exceptional individuals (no sponsorship needed), and various family routes. The 2026 landscape features higher salary thresholds, B2 English requirements, and graduate-level skill requirements. Settlement after 5 years for most work routes. New ETA requirement for visa-free visitors from February 2026.

Ancestry Visa

Visa for Commonwealth citizens with a grandparent born in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man. Also available for citizens of Zimbabwe and British overseas territories/nationals. Grandparent must have been born before 31 March 1922 if in what is now the Republic of Ireland. Must intend to work in the UK. 5-year visa leading directly to settlement. One of the most flexible UK work visas with no salary threshold or sponsorship requirement. Can apply from outside UK only (extensions from inside).

British Citizenship

UK naturalization requires 5 years lawful residence (3 years if married to British citizen), with Indefinite Leave to Remain for at least 12 months before applying. Must meet residence requirements: no more than 450 days outside UK in 5 years, no more than 90 days outside in final year. Must pass Life in the UK test and meet English B1 requirement. Good character requirement. Citizenship ceremony required after approval. Processing takes 3-6 months. Note: Government has proposed extending residence requirement to 10 years - not yet in force.

Family Visa

Visa for partners, children, and other family members of British citizens or settled persons. Minimum income requirement is £29,000 (increased from £18,600 in April 2024). Can also meet requirement through savings (£88,500 if relying solely on savings). Planned increases to £38,700 have been paused following MAC review. Initial visa for 2.5 years (33 months), then extend for another 2.5 years. Settlement after 5 years total. Must pass Life in the UK test and meet English requirement for settlement.

Global Talent Visa

Flexible visa for highly skilled individuals in science, engineering, humanities, medicine, digital technology, and arts/culture. No job offer or sponsorship required. Two pathways: Exceptional Talent (established leaders) and Exceptional Promise (emerging talent). Requires endorsement from approved body - Tech Nation for digital technology, Royal Society for science, Arts Council for arts. No salary threshold or English language test. Fast-track to settlement: 3 years for Talent holders in science/digital/arts, 5 years for others. Total cost only £766 plus healthcare surcharge.

Graduate Route

Post-study work visa for international students who completed a degree at a licensed UK institution. No job offer or sponsorship required. Currently 2 years for bachelor's/master's, 3 years for PhD. IMPORTANT CHANGE: From January 1, 2027, duration reduces to 18 months for those graduating after that date (those graduating before December 31, 2026 still get 2 years). Can work in any job at any skill level. Does not lead directly to settlement - must switch to another route (usually Skilled Worker) for settlement path.

Health and Care Worker Visa

Dedicated visa for qualified healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, and social care workers. Lower salary thresholds than standard Skilled Worker (from £25,000 depending on role). Exempt from Immigration Skills Charge. Reduced visa fees and healthcare surcharge exemption. Requires job offer from NHS, NHS supplier, or CQC-registered care provider. Same 5-year path to settlement as Skilled Worker. Priority processing available.

Visa for graduates of top global universities (non-UK) in the past 5 years. University must appear on Home Office annual list (58 universities for 2025-26). No job offer or sponsorship needed. 2 years for bachelor's/master's, 3 years for PhD. English requirement increased to B2 from January 2026. Flexible work rights - can work for any employer or be self-employed. Does not lead to settlement directly - must switch to another route. Good stepping stone to find UK employment and switch to Skilled Worker.

Innovator Founder Visa

Visa for entrepreneurs with innovative, scalable business ideas. Must be endorsed by Home Office-approved endorsing body. Business idea must be new (not joining existing business), innovative (different from existing market offerings), and scalable (potential for job creation and international growth). No minimum investment requirement unlike previous Innovator visa. Two check-in meetings with endorsing body at 12 and 24 months. Fast-track to settlement after 3 years if business is active, trading, and sustainable. From November 2025, students can switch directly from within UK.

Skilled Worker Visa

Main employment visa for workers with job offers in eligible skilled occupations. Requires employer sponsorship from a licensed sponsor. MAJOR 2026 CHANGES: Minimum salary threshold increased to £41,700 (or 100% of occupation going rate, whichever higher) from July 2025. Skill level requirement raised to RQF 6 (graduate-level). English requirement increased to B2 from January 2026 for new applicants. Lower thresholds available for PhD holders (£37,500/£33,400) and new entrants (£33,400). Health and education roles have separate thresholds. Immigration Skills Charge: £1,320/year for medium/large employers. Valid up to 5 years, renewable, leads to settlement after 5 years.

Standard Visitor Visa

Visa for tourism, business visits, medical treatment, and short-term study (up to 6 months). Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) required from February 2026 for visa-free nationals (85 countries including US, EU, Canada). ETA costs £16, valid 2 years. Visa required for nationals of approximately 100 countries. Can stay up to 6 months per visit (up to 11 months for medical treatment, 12 months for academics). Cannot work or access public funds. Limited business activities permitted (meetings, conferences, negotiations).

Student Visa

Visa for international students studying at licensed UK institutions. Requires Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from licensed sponsor. Can work 20 hours/week during term, full-time during holidays. Maintenance funds required: £1,529/month for London, £1,171/month outside London for 9 months. Important restriction: undergraduate and taught postgraduate students can no longer bring dependants (only PhD/research students can). Graduate Route available after completion for 2 years post-study work (18 months from January 2027).

Youth Mobility Scheme

Working holiday visa for young adults from participating countries. Age 18-30 (or 18-35 for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea). Eligible countries include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Iceland, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, Uruguay. NOT available for EU citizens (except by ballot). 2-year duration (3 years for Australia, Canada, NZ who can extend by 1 year). Ballot system for Hong Kong and Taiwan. Full work rights without sponsorship. Does not lead to settlement - once in a lifetime opportunity.
