Hungary Visa Options

7 visa types available

Hungary provides multiple immigration pathways for non-EU citizens. The White Card digital nomad visa requires €3,000/month income and allows 2 years of residence. The EU Blue Card serves skilled workers with salaries above HUF 1,001,048/month. The Golden Visa program offers 10-year residence through €250,000 investment. Family reunification, student visas, and standard work permits are also available. Citizenship requires 11+ years of residence.

Citizenship

Hungarian citizenship by naturalization requires 8 years of continuous residence with permanent residency status, plus 3 years of temporary residence before that (11+ years total). Reduced periods apply for those born in Hungary (5 years), refugees/stateless persons (3 years), or spouses of Hungarian citizens (3 years of marriage). Requirements include: passing Hungarian language/constitution exam, clean criminal record, stable income and accommodation. Hungary allows dual citizenship. Simplified naturalization (no residence requirement) available for those with Hungarian ancestry. Hungarian citizenship grants EU citizenship with visa-free travel to 171+ countries.

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is Hungary's primary work visa for highly qualified non-EU professionals. For 2026, the minimum salary threshold is HUF 1,001,048/month (approximately €2,600), with a reduced threshold of HUF 800,838/month for shortage occupations (healthcare professionals). Requires a university degree or 3+ years specialized experience, plus a job offer of at least 6 months. A labor market test may be required. Valid for up to 4 years with full work rights. Provides accelerated path to permanent residency after 3 years (vs. 5 years for standard permits). Family members can join immediately with full work rights for spouse.

Family Reunification

Hungary's family reunification visa allows family members of legal residents to join them. Eligible relatives include spouses, minor children (including adopted/fostered), and minor children of spouse with custody. The sponsor must hold a valid residence permit, immigration permit, or permanent residence. Processing takes up to 70 days. Residence permit valid for 3 years, renewable. Note: 2024 immigration law changes restrict family reunification for certain permit types (guest worker, seasonal, investment permits under 1 year). Family members do not automatically receive work rights but can apply for work permits once in Hungary.

Golden Visa (Guest Investor)

Hungary's Golden Visa (Guest Investor Program) launched in 2024 offers 10-year residence permits to non-EU investors. Two investment options: €250,000 in approved real estate investment funds (5-year holding period) or €1 million donation to higher education. As of January 2025, direct real estate purchase is no longer available. No minimum stay requirement. Full work rights included. Family members (spouse, children under 26, parents 65+) can be included. Path to permanent residency after 3 years and citizenship after 8+ more years. Program status: exercise caution as some advisors report the program may be experiencing delays.

Student Visa

Hungary's student residence permit allows non-EU nationals to study at Hungarian universities and educational institutions. Requires acceptance letter from a recognized institution. Must prove sufficient funds (~€700/month) and health insurance coverage. Initial Type D visa required for entry, then residence permit application within 15 days of arrival. Work permitted up to 24 hours/week during studies. Hungary offers the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program for international students. Many programs taught in English at lower costs than Western Europe.

White Card (Digital Nomad)

Hungary's White Card (Fehér Kártya) is a dedicated residence permit for digital nomads and remote workers from non-EU countries. Launched in 2022, it allows location-independent professionals to live in Hungary while working remotely for foreign employers or running their own foreign-based business. Requirements include proof of €3,000 monthly income for the past 6 months and €10,000 in savings. The permit is valid for 1 year, renewable once for a maximum 2-year stay. Holders can travel visa-free throughout the Schengen Area (90 days per 180-day period). Note: time on White Card does not count toward permanent residency, and family members cannot be included.

Work Permit

The standard Hungarian work permit (combined single permit for residence and work) is for non-EU workers who don't qualify for the EU Blue Card. Requires employer sponsorship and typically a labor market test proving no suitable EU candidate is available. Valid for up to 2 years, renewable. Lower salary thresholds than Blue Card but also fewer benefits. Employer must demonstrate genuine need and provide suitable working conditions. Processing typically takes 30-70 days. Can lead to permanent residency after 5 years of continuous residence.
