Learning Hindi

Apps:

  • Duolingo Hindi
  • Hindi Pod 101
  • Google Translate (works reasonably well)

In-person:

  • Private tutors: ₹300-800/hour
  • Language schools in major cities
  • Many universities offer Hindi courses for foreigners

Communication Tips

  1. English works in most urban professional settings
  2. Learn numbers in Hindi—useful for prices and bargaining
  3. Google Translate is invaluable for signs and menus
  4. Regional languages matter—Hindi may not work in South India
  5. Head wobble: The characteristic Indian head wobble can mean yes, no, or maybe depending on context
  6. "Ji": Adding "ji" after someone's name shows respect

South India Note

In Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, Hindi is not widely spoken and sometimes resisted. English or the local language is preferred. Don't assume Hindi works everywhere.

Pro Tips

  • English works well in tech, business, and educated circles across urban India
  • Hindi does not work in much of South India—use English or learn local basics
  • Learning basic Hindi numbers helps enormously with bargaining and daily life
  • Google Translate is your best friend for signs, menus, and quick communication
  • The head wobble can mean anything—context is everything
