View all📊Business e-Visa
The Business e-Visa is the most practical option for digital nomads and freelancers in India. It covers business meetings, trade fairs, establishing partnerships, and remote consultancy work. Available as a 1-year multiple-entry visa with 180-day maximum stay per visit. Applied for entirely online at indianvisaonline.gov.in with processing in 3-4 working days. Fee is approximately $80 for US citizens and $50 for most other nationalities. Entry is permitted through 31 designated international airports and 6 seaports. Does not permit full-time employment with an Indian company but covers independent business activities and remote work for foreign clients. Cannot be converted to an employment visa.
🏛️Citizenship by Naturalization
Indian citizenship by naturalization requires 12 years of lawful residence—at least 12 months immediately before application plus an aggregate of 11 years in the preceding 14 years. Applicants must be of good character, demonstrate adequate knowledge of at least one of India's 22 scheduled languages, intend to reside in India permanently, and renounce their previous nationality (India does not allow dual citizenship). The application is submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Processing is lengthy and discretionary. The Permanent Residency Scheme (PRS) for investors (INR 10-25 crore investment creating 20+ Indian jobs) provides a path to citizenship within 12 years. The fee is INR 1,500. The Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025 is modernizing the legal framework.
💼Employment Visa (E Visa)
The Employment Visa is India's primary work visa for foreign nationals taking up skilled employment with an Indian-registered entity. Issued for 1 year or the contract duration, extendable up to 5 years total. Requires specialized skills not readily available in India's local labor market and a minimum annual salary of USD 25,000 (with exceptions for NGO workers, language teachers, and university faculty). The sponsoring Indian company must provide a formal employment agreement. No change of employer is permitted during visa validity—switching jobs requires leaving India and applying for a fresh visa. Registration with FRRO is required within 14 days of arrival for stays over 180 days. Sub-categories include direct employment, intra-company transfers (ICT), and NGO work.
📚e-Student Visa
Introduced in January 2025, the e-Student Visa streamlines the process for foreign students admitted to Indian universities. Students apply through the Study in India portal (studyinindia.gov.in) for courses at 160+ accredited institutions covering 2,600+ programs, then use a portal code to apply for the e-visa online—eliminating the need to visit an Indian diplomatic mission. Granted for up to 5 years or the course duration (whichever is less). A provisional student visa (3 months) is available for those with conditional admission. Sub-categories include S-1 (higher education), S-5 (research scholars), and S-6 (internships). Students must register with FRRO and cannot take up employment during studies. The e-Student Dependent Visa (e-Student-X) covers dependents.
✈️e-Tourist Visa
India's e-Tourist Visa is available to citizens of 171+ countries and can be applied for entirely online. Three validity options: 30-day (single/double entry), 1-year (multiple entry), and 5-year (multiple entry). Maximum continuous stay is 90 days per visit (180 days for US, UK, Canada, and Japan nationals). The 30-day visa costs $25 (July-March) or $10 (April-June), while the 1-year visa is $40. Entry through 31 designated airports and 6 seaports. The new e-Arrival Card system launched October 2025 allows digital submission of arrival information up to 72 hours before travel. Does not permit any form of employment or business activity.
🪪Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card
The OCI card provides persons of Indian origin with a lifelong multiple-entry visa, exemption from FRRO registration, and parity with NRIs in economic, financial, and educational fields. Over 4 million individuals hold OCI cards as of 2025. Eligible applicants include former Indian citizens, their children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren, and spouses of Indian citizens or OCI holders (after 2+ years of registered marriage). OCI holders can own residential property (not agricultural land), invest in Indian markets, and use it as ID for PAN cards, driving licenses, and bank accounts. However, OCI is not full citizenship—holders cannot vote, hold constitutional posts, or possess an Indian passport. India does not permit dual nationality. The new OCI portal launched May 2025 simplifies applications, and Fast Track Immigration e-gates are now at 8 major airports.
🏗️Project Visa
The Project Visa is issued to foreign nationals executing specific projects in India's power, steel, infrastructure, and engineering sectors. It is project-specific—the holder cannot engage in work outside the designated project or location. Ideal for employers hiring foreign technical staff for defined, time-bound assignments where local talent is unavailable. Valid for the project/contract duration with multiple-entry facility. Requires sponsorship from the Indian project company and evidence that specialized foreign expertise is needed. Registration with FRRO required within 14 days of arrival. Cannot be converted to other visa types.
Expat Life
View allCost of Living
India is one of the world's most affordable countries for expats. A comfortable lifestyle costs ₹40,000-80,000/month ($500-1,000) in most cities, with Mumbai requiring ₹80,000-150,000+ ($1,000-1,800). Rent is 80-90% cheaper than the US.
Healthcare
India is a major medical tourism destination with world-class private hospitals in major cities. Private healthcare costs 50-80% less than Western countries. The public system is free for citizens but overstretched. International health insurance is strongly recommended for expats.
Banking
Opening a bank account in India requires proper visa documentation. Foreign nationals on employment visas can open NRO accounts. UPI digital payments are ubiquitous. SBI, HDFC, and ICICI are the most accessible banks for foreigners.
Housing
Renting is the primary option for foreigners in India. One-bedroom apartments range from ₹8,000/month (smaller cities) to ₹60,000+ (South Mumbai). Foreign ownership of property is restricted. Security deposits are typically 2-3 months rent in most cities, up to 10 months in Mumbai.
Remote Work
India ranked #1 globally for digital nomad affordability in 2025. No dedicated digital nomad visa exists, but the business e-visa covers remote work. Goa is the top nomad hub, Bangalore offers tech-hub energy, and Yakten (Sikkim) became India's first digital nomad village in 2025.
Taxes
India taxes residents (182+ days) on worldwide income. Non-residents pay tax only on Indian-sourced income. The new tax regime (default from FY 2025-26) has rates from 0-30% with income up to ₹4 lakh tax-free. The Income Tax Bill 2025 modernizes the framework from April 2026.
Transportation
India has expanding metro systems in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and other cities. Ola and Uber are the go-to ride-hailing apps with very affordable fares. Auto-rickshaws are iconic and cheap. Domestic flights connect 100+ cities affordably.
Language
India has 22 officially recognized languages with Hindi and English serving as link languages. English is widely spoken in business, tech, and educated circles. Hindi covers much of north and central India. Each state has its own regional language.
Safety
India has moderate safety for expats. Violent crime against foreigners is uncommon, but petty theft, scams, and traffic accidents are concerns. Women should take extra precautions. Major cities have dedicated tourist police and the 112 unified emergency number.
Expat Community
India has a growing expat community centered in Goa, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi. NomadGao is the leading digital nomad community with coliving spaces in Goa and Dharamkot. Facebook groups and Internations provide networking. The community is diverse but smaller than Southeast Asian nomad hubs.
Climate & Weather
India has incredibly diverse climates—from tropical Kerala to alpine Ladakh, arid Rajasthan to monsoon-drenched Meghalaya. The monsoon season (June-September) brings heavy rains. October-March is generally the best period. Delhi and northern plains face extreme heat (45°C+) in May-June.
Food & Dining
Indian cuisine is legendary in its diversity and affordability. Street food meals cost ₹30-80, restaurant thalis ₹80-200. Each state has distinct cuisine. Vegetarian options are abundant. Food hygiene requires some adjustment—avoid tap water and start slowly with street food.
Education
India has numerous international schools following IB, British, and American curricula. Annual fees range from ₹3-25 lakh ($3,600-$30,000). India's own higher education system includes world-renowned IITs and IIMs. The Study in India portal connects international students with 160+ institutions.
Family Life
India is a family-oriented culture where children are warmly welcomed everywhere. Domestic help and childcare are very affordable (₹8,000-20,000/month for full-time nanny). Challenges include air pollution in Delhi, school competition, and adjusting to the pace of Indian life.
Culture & Lifestyle
India's culture is ancient, diverse, and deeply spiritual. Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism, and other faiths coexist. "Jugaad" (creative problem-solving) defines the entrepreneurial spirit. Key customs include removing shoes, eating with the right hand, and respecting the concept of "namaste."
