Business e-Visa
The Business e-Visa is the most practical option for digital nomads and freelancers in India. It covers business meetings, trade fairs, establishing partnerships, and remote consultancy work. Available as a 1-year multiple-entry visa with 180-day maximum stay per visit. Applied for entirely online at indianvisaonline.gov.in with processing in 3-4 working days. Fee is approximately $80 for US citizens and $50 for most other nationalities. Entry is permitted through 31 designated international airports and 6 seaports. Does not permit full-time employment with an Indian company but covers independent business activities and remote work for foreign clients. Cannot be converted to an employment visa.

Citizenship by Naturalization
Indian citizenship by naturalization requires 12 years of lawful residence—at least 12 months immediately before application plus an aggregate of 11 years in the preceding 14 years. Applicants must be of good character, demonstrate adequate knowledge of at least one of India's 22 scheduled languages, intend to reside in India permanently, and renounce their previous nationality (India does not allow dual citizenship). Employment Visa (E Visa)
The Employment Visa is India's primary work visa for foreign nationals taking up skilled employment with an Indian-registered entity. Requires specialized skills not readily available in India's local labor market and a minimum annual salary of USD 25,000 (with exceptions for NGO workers, language teachers, and university faculty). e-Student Visa
Introduced in January 2025, the e-Student Visa streamlines the process for foreign students admitted to Indian universities. Students apply through the Study in India portal (studyinindia.gov.in) for courses at 160+ accredited institutions covering 2,600+ programs, then use a portal code to apply for the e-visa online—eliminating the need to visit an Indian diplomatic mission. Granted for up to 5 years or the course duration (whichever is less). A provisional student visa (3 months) is available for those with conditional admission. Sub-categories include S-1 (higher education), S-5 (research scholars), and S-6 (internships). Students must register with FRRO and cannot take up employment during studies. e-Tourist Visa
India's e-Tourist Visa is available to citizens of 171+ countries and can be applied for entirely online. Three validity options: 30-day (single/double entry), 1-year (multiple entry), and 5-year (multiple entry). Maximum continuous stay is 90 days per visit (180 days for US, UK, Canada, and Japan nationals). The 30-day visa costs $25 (July-March) or $10 (April-June), while the 1-year visa is $40. Entry through 31 designated airports and 6 seaports. The new e-Arrival Card system launched October 2025 allows digital submission of arrival information up to 72 hours before travel. Does not permit any form of employment or business activity.

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card
The OCI card provides persons of Indian origin with a lifelong multiple-entry visa, exemption from FRRO registration, and parity with NRIs in economic, financial, and educational fields. Over 4 million individuals hold OCI cards as of 2025. Eligible applicants include former Indian citizens, their children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren, and spouses of Indian citizens or OCI holders (after 2+ years of registered marriage). OCI holders can own residential property (not agricultural land), invest in Indian markets, and use it as ID for PAN cards, driving licenses, and bank accounts. However, OCI is not full citizenship—holders cannot vote, hold constitutional posts, or possess an Indian passport. India does not permit dual nationality. The new OCI portal launched May 2025 simplifies applications, and Fast Track Immigration e-gates are now at 8 major airports.

Project Visa
