Kuala Lumpur has expanding MRT/LRT networks with more lines opening. Grab (ride-hailing) is ubiquitous and affordable. Driving is common but traffic can be severe. International license valid for 3 months.

Transportation in Malaysia

Getting around Malaysia ranges from excellent (KL's expanding rail network) to challenging (traffic jams). Most expats combine public transit with Grab for optimal convenience.

Public Transit (Kuala Lumpur)

Rail Network:

  • MRT (Mass Rapid Transit): 2 lines covering 109km, modern stations
  • LRT (Light Rail Transit): 3 lines, extensive coverage
  • Monorail: City center loop
  • KTM Komuter: Suburban rail
  • KLIA Ekspres/Transit: Airport connection

Fares:

  • Single ride: RM1.10-6.40 ($0.25-1.50)
  • Touch 'n Go card for all systems
  • MyTourist Pass: Unlimited daily travel

Operating Hours:

  • Typically 6:00 AM - 11:30 PM
  • Some lines have extended hours

Coverage:

  • Good in city center and along MRT corridors
  • Improving rapidly with new lines
  • Still gaps in some suburban areas

Buses

  • RapidKL buses connect areas not on rail
  • Cheap: RM1-3 per ride
  • Can be slow during traffic
  • Air-conditioned

Grab (Ride-Hailing)

By far the most common transportation for expats:

  • Available everywhere
  • Affordable: $2-5 for most city trips
  • Multiple options: GrabCar, GrabBike, GrabTaxi
  • Payment via app or cash
  • Safe and reliable

Alternatives:

  • AirAsia Ride
  • MyCar
  • Regular taxis (use meter or negotiate)

Driving

License Requirements:

  • International Driving Permit: Valid 3 months
  • Commonwealth license holders: Usable during initial period
  • After 90 days: Convert to Malaysian license
  • Conversion process: Vision test, documents, fee at JPJ

Car Ownership:

  • New cars: Expensive due to import duties
  • Used cars: More affordable
  • Proton/Perodua (local brands): Best value
  • Insurance: Required, ~RM1,500-3,000/year
  • Petrol: Subsidized, very cheap (~$1.60/gallon)

Traffic Considerations:

  • KL traffic is notorious - allow extra time
  • Peak hours: 7-10 AM, 5-8 PM
  • Monsoon season: Flash floods cause delays
  • Parking: Available but can be challenging in city

Between Cities

Domestic Flights:

  • Very affordable for long distances
  • Essential for Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak)

Long-Distance Buses:

  • Comfortable, air-conditioned coaches
  • KL to Penang: 4-5 hours, ~RM35-50
  • KL to Singapore: 4-5 hours, ~RM40-70

ETS Train:

  • High-speed rail to northern cities
  • KL to Penang: 4 hours, ~RM60-120
  • Comfortable, scenic

Penang & Other Cities

Penang:

  • Penang Bridge connects to mainland
  • RapidPenang buses
  • Grab widely available
  • Bicycle-friendly Georgetown

Johor Bahru:

  • Connected to Singapore via 2 causeways
  • KTM train to Singapore
  • Local buses limited
  • Grab essential

  • Get Touch 'n Go card for all public transit and parking
  • Grab is essential - download app immediately
  • Avoid driving in KL rush hour if possible (7-10 AM, 5-8 PM)
  • MRT is fastest way to cross the city during traffic
