Digital Nomad Visa

South Africa's Digital Nomad Visa became fully operational in March 2025 after being added to Immigration Regulations in March 2024. Allows remote workers employed by or contracted to companies outside South Africa to live in the country for up to 3 years (issued in 12-month increments, renewable). Requires minimum gross annual income of ZAR 650,976 (reduced from ZAR 1,000,000 in October 2024). Applicants must have private health insurance recognized in South Africa. Tax registration with SARS required if working more than 6 months within any 36-month period. Accompanying spouse and dependents can join. Does not permit local employment or freelancing for South African businesses.

No longer requires Department of Labour letter - significantly streamlined process. Employer must demonstrate the position couldn't be filled locally. Valid up to 5 years. Can lead to permanent residence after meeting requirements.

Financial requirement of ZAR 8,500/month per sponsored relative (waived for spouse and minor children). Spouses can apply for permanent residence after 5 years of legal marriage. Processing typically 4-8 weeks.
